Pastoral Assistant and Teaching Aide in Oak Arbor, Michigan

Abigail Echols:

My term interning at the Oak Arbor Church and School was one of the best terms I have had in college. I was doing two internships: I was working for the church as the Pastor’s assistant, and I was working for the school as an aide in all of the classrooms. I got to learn about office dynamics, and learn about working in a church office that covers everything from scheduling events to taking messages and putting out the newsletter. In the classrooms I got to work with the kids in a fun and effective way, and I also got to experience what it would actually be like to work as a teacher.

Doing these internships helped me so much in understanding the things that I enjoy doing, and the things that I am not at all interested in doing as a career. It was wonderful to take time away from classes and remind myself that the point of getting an education is to help me broaden my horizons so that I can get out into the world and work with PEOPLE. Real people, who have lives and loves and dislikes. While this internship didn’t have a large impact on my career and education decisions, it was just a great reminder about why I want to get an education, and ultimately what I want to do once I am out of school.
