Bryn Athyn College Biology Major Hosts Field Trip to See Bald Eagles

On Saturday April 28th, the College hosted a trip for the community to  the Holtwood Dam in Pennsylvania and the Conowingo Dam in Maryland on the Susquehanna River, where there are several active bald eagle nests. The trip was a great success. We saw about 30 bald eagles and four active nests (two of which had eaglets that we could watch in our binoculars). Click here for photos and a description of the trip.

College Colloquium on Bald Eagles

On Thursday April 24th, four Bryn Athyn College professors gave a College colloquium on different aspects of bald eagles. Brian Henderson talked about the history of the great seal of the United States, and the Rev. Grant Odhner presented on what the Word says about eagles. Eugene Potapov talked about the biology of sea eagles and bald eagles. He showed several video clips, including some of his own films of the Steller's sea eagle, the largest eagle in the world. Fredrik Bryntesson showed photos of bald eagles taken along the Susquehanna River this spring.

Presentation about the Kestrel Nest Box Project

On Tuesday April 24th, Professor Fredrik Bryntesson gave a presentation at Cairnwood Village in Bryn Athyn. The purpose of the talk was to inform the community about the ongoing kestrel nest box project that the Biology Major program at Bryn Athyn College manages.

Biology Major Senior Presents Research Data at the Sigma XI Event at Thomas Jefferson University

On Thursday, April 12th, Dan Hultgren presented a poster at the Sigma XI event at Thomas Jefferson University. Dan is a senior in the Bryn Athyn College Biology Major, and the poster he presented is based on his senior research project. This project is supervised by Dr. Raj Dave at the Division of Infectious Diseases, Center for Human Virology, at Thomas Jefferson University. The title for Dan's poster was "Identification of Potential Viral-encoded miRNA from CNS-derived Isolates of HIV-1."

Dan will graduate this Spring. Following his graduation, Dan will begin work as a teacher at the Academy of the New Church Secondary Schools.

Bryn Athyn College Undertaking a Deer Study

Dr Eugene Potapov and a deer trap.

Bryn Athyn College is currently involved in a deer study together with the Pennypack Ecological Restoration Trust (PERT). This research project is based on tracking deer using satellite technology. The photos below show the type of deer collar that we use in this project.

Kestrel Nest Boxes

This winter the ornithology class (Bio 115), under guidance of Dr. Eugene Potapov, built four kestrel nest boxes that are being placed in various locations around the College campus. (One is very close to Childs Hall). The American kestrel is the smallest falcon in the United States, and it frequently nests in manmade boxes. It is possible that we will have a nesting pair of these elegant raptors in one or more of the boxes this year, and if so, we ask everyone to enjoy these birds from a distance and to refrain from disturbing them. Click here for photos of the nest boxes and the kestrels that visit them.

On Monday, March 26th, one of the nest boxes was visited by a kestrel! Since then we have had kestrels visiting the nest box every day. This photo of a perched kestrel on the nest box was taken on March 28th.

Bryn Athyn College Biology Professor Joins HIV Research Project

In early March, Dr. Fredrik Bryntesson joined a research project investigating the molecular biology of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) with Dr. Rene Daniel and Johanna Smith at the Division of Infectious Diseases, Center for Human Virology, at Thomas Jefferson University.

Field Trip to the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia on December 14, 2006

On Thursday, December 14, the Bryn Athyn College Biology 115 class took a field trip to the Academy of Natural Sciences. We were hosted by Dr. Nate Rice, who showed us the "behind-the-scenes" part of the Academy of Natural Sciences. The visit included a look at the Academy's vast collection of bird skins and a fascinating demonstration by Dr. Rice on how a bird skin is prepared.
