Biology Major News And Events - Kestrel Nest Boxes

<<Back

Here are photos of the nest boxes that students in Biology 115 (ornithology) constructed this winter. These nest boxes are located around the Bryn Athyn College Campus and have already attracted the attention of several Kestrels.

The bio 115 class with the newly constructed Kestrel nest boxes.

Update June 19, 2007: The eggs have hatched. There are 5 healthy chicks in the nest box!

Update June 6, 2007: Today we confirmed that the Kestrels are breeding. The female in these photos is incubating eggs that will soon hatch. We have falcons breeding on our College campus!

Update on May 7, 2007: We saw the Kestrels again on the nest box field today. However, they are not yet breeding. We took the opportunity to check the nest boxes this morning. All was well with the boxes. We found no sign of other bird species in the boxes.

Update on May 4, 2007: The female and male Kestrels were flying over the nest box field this morning. The male was seen hovering above the field (this is a hunting technique used by Kestrels).

Update on May 2, 2007: This morning the male and female Kestrels were seen on the nest box again. They have now spent over a month at the nest box. We hope to establish soon whether they are successful in their breeding attempts.

The photos below of when we put up the nest boxes were taken during February and March 2007.
