Interdisciplinary Major

INTERDISCIPLINARY MAJOR

The interdisciplinary major program provides an exciting opportunity to fulfill requirements leading to a Bachelor of Arts by combining areas of concentration from many areas of the curriculum. The program for each student is uniquely designed and provides a challenge to the student to develop, in a structured way, the interrelationships of different fields of knowledge, and thus to gain a significant understanding of the unity of all truth - spiritual, moral, civil, and scientific.

Since its inception in the mid -1970's, the Interdisciplinary (ID) major has been popular with students from all disciplines. In essence the program combines two areas, such as Mathematics and Philosophy, using courses from each area and a major study - the senior paper or senior project - that connects both areas and attempts to relate the work to the distinctive theology of the New Church.

Many combinations of areas are possible. Students have pursued studies that combine Biological sciences, Classical Languages, Computer Science, Education, English, History, Mathematics, Philosophy, Physical Sciences, Psychology, and other Social Sciences. Business and Psychology now have more specialized ID majors that meet their unique requirements. The program also encourages the use of transfer courses to augment the College's own curricular offerings as a further method of meeting requirements. The College facilitates the process of taking such courses at local colleges and universities.

The program is now well established and has developed an enviable track record for success. Alumni of the program include many with doctorates and other advanced degrees, as well as those who have entered the job market right from graduation.

Advisor Information

Dr. Allen J. Bedford is the interdisciplinary major program advisor. The initial meeting should occur during the spring term of sophomore year as the ID major begins in junior year. If you have questions, call Dr. Bedford at 267-502-2567 or drop by his office in Benade Hall.

Two programs within the interdisciplinary major have their own advisors: Dr. Soni Werner serves as the advisor for the psychology interdisciplinary program and Walter C. Childs III serves as the advisor for the business interdisciplinary program.

Student affirmation: "The ID Program at Bryn Athyn College is an amazing learning experience, starting with the freedom to choose classes to meet the requirements, exploring two areas of study, and along the way finding a topic for the senior research paper. From start to finish, the program and the support from faculty and my advisor were life-shaping events with excellent outcomes. I am ready for grad school and much more."
