Admission Requirements and Procedures

Applicants should have an Associate in Arts degree or its equivalent, and they should have compiled a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 and a minimum of 2.7 in English courses. Those who do not have an Associate in Arts degree but who have completed two years of college work may be admitted to the English major upon the program advisor's evaluation of the transcript.

Applications should be addressed to the English program advisor, Dr. Kristin King.

Course Requirements

Common Requirements:

  • Fulfill all requirements of the Humanities Emphasis Associate in Arts degree program.
  • Four upper-level religion courses (see College religion residence requirement).
  • American Literature: English 218 and 219
  • British Literature: English 220 and 221
  • Shakespeare: English 235
  • 12 upper-level credits in a supporting area, which must be approved by the program advisor. (At least 6 credits must be at the 300-level.)

Further Requirements:

Language and Literature Emphasis

  • Writing: English 211 or 213
  • Five from 300-level Literature
  • Two upper-level English or Humanities electives

Writing Emphasis

  • Writing: English 211 and 213
  • One Advanced Writing: English 311 or 312
  • English Language: English 320
  • Two upper-level English or Humanities electives
  • Senior writing project*

*The senior writing project involves a major effort in some area of writing to be produced under the supervision of an advisor. The project could include a collection of short fiction, essays or critical pieces, a collection of poems, a segment of a novel or play, or some other project that reflected the student's best focused efforts in writing. The project would involve the student over a two-term period of the senior year.
