Advising Philosophy
The purpose of academic advising is to connect the student with a full-time faculty member who supports that student in shaping and pursuing a course of study appropriate to his/her career choices and life goals.
Academic advising is an integral part of our commitment to a personalized education
- Academic advising is a developmental process which assists students in the clarification of their career/life goals and in the development of educational plans for the realization of these goals.
- Academic advising is a decision-making process through which students realize their educational potential through communication and information exchanges with an advisor; it is ongoing, and the responsibility of both student and advisor.
- The academic advisor serves as a facilitator of communication, a coordinator of learning experiences through course planning, and an agent of referral to other campus agencies as necessary.
Features of Advising at Bryn Athyn College
- Each freshman is assigned to a first-year advisor who focuses on issues relevant to students making the transition to the college environment. This advisor will join students in orientation sessions and assist them in planning their academic programs.
- In their second year, students can either apply to a major program or work with an advisor in an area of interest. This allows the students to benefit from a different perspective while surveying the range of possible majors and careers.
- Once accepted in a major program, each student will be advised by a faculty member from that major or discipline. The advisor continues to develop a personalized relationship as the student's focus shifts to a particular discipline, preparing for graduation and a life of service.
- In keeping with the commitment to a personalized educational experience, the average number of students assigned to an advisor at Bryn Athyn College is five.
