The Self Supporting College Student

Students who are eligible for federal financial aid are defined as financially dependent on or independent of their parents based on criteria determined by the U.S. Department of Education. When determining a student's eligibility for institutional aid in addition to any federal awards, Bryn Athyn College will use the status that is indicated on the student's federal financial aid application (FAFSA).

When students are not eligible for federal financial aid, Bryn Athyn College's Financial Aid Office reserves the right to use its own definition of a self-supporting student. Among other points it will consider the following when making a decision:

  • Will the student be 24 years of age by December 31st of the school year for which aid is being applied?
  • Is the student a veteran of the US Armed Forces?
  • Is the student an orphan or ward of the Court?
  • Did the student earn income in excess by $4,750 in each of the preceding two calendar years?
  • Was the student not claimed as a tax exemption by his/her parents in the preceding two years and will not be claimed in the current year?
  • Can the student substantiate having paid monthly rent for the preceding two years?
