Medieval Faire Students Garner Rave Reviews.

<< Back

Student presenters wowed the crowd at Glencairn Museum’s annual Medieval Faire.  Thirteen Bryn Athyn College students, steeped in Medieval life and lore, donned costumes and spoke on researched topics to a 600+ attendance. Topics included life as a woman in Medieval times; wool spinning; weapons and armor; illuminated manuscripts; and the role of Mary in Medieval religious art.

The arms and armor station was a real crowd-pleaser, one museum rep said. Station presenter Bryan Kunkle writes of his experience, “Having classes . . . at Glencairn gives you a completely different feeling and experience for class. . . . I had a lot of fun looking up the information on knighthood. . . . One of the greatest things about our station was that it appealed to both children and adults. The kids would come in and just walk around the room, staring at the weapons.”

Hannah Simons says her research topic on the role of women in Medieval society meshed well with her major in Women’s History. She learned that “women” of 16-17 years married and, though considered second-class citizens, were expected to run the manor, keep track of finances, and supervise the staff while their husbands were away at war.

Their conclusion? The Faire provides a valuable, unique experience, tying in well with the College Internship Program for anyone seeking museum or hands-on experience working with the public. “How often,” says Hannah, “do you get to dress up, listen to music, and run around barefoot in a castle?”
