Groundbreaking to Begin on New Student Housing.

<< Back

This summer, the College will break ground on a new student residence project.  Designed by Spillman Farmer Architects, the new cottage-style buildings will be located adjacent to Childs Hall and Grant Hall, the existing men's and women's residence halls.  The cottages will provide an attractive living space with greater amenities for third and fourth year students.

Phase one of the project includes the construction of four cottage-style units each designed for 8-12 students.  A fifth unit will accommodate a faculty supervisor and family.  The overall layout of the cottages will be in a U-shape with a landscaped courtyard in th middle for outdoor entertainment and recreation.  Each cottage will have a small front entrance porch and a full-sized back patio.

The entrance to each unit leads into a large living and dining area with cathedral ceilings.  An open style kitchen and guest bathroom are located adjacent to this area.  In order to create privacy, all bedrooms and hallways are behind closed doors.  The first floor also includes two single bedrooms, one double bedroom, and  a private bathroom.  The second floor will have the same configuration of bedrooms and bathrooms.  There are also plans to include a study on the second floor.  Several unique features will create a distinct look for each cottage.

Phase two includes the construction of additional housing for both faculty and students and moving a portion of College Drive to the perimeter of the campus to create a greater sense of community and a more pedestrian-friendly residence area.

The projected completion date for phase one is the summer of 2008.  The second phase of the project has an estimated 3-5 year completion date.  The appeal of this new housing will make a significant contribution to the quality of student life on campus and the help the College in attracting and retaining students.
