Student Receives Williamsburg Scholarship.

<< Back

Kendra Knight ’08 was awarded a scholarship to pursue a one-week internship with Colonial Williamsburg.  The scholarship, which is unique to Bryn Athyn College, will enable Kendra to participate along with experienced educators from across the country in Williamsburg’s Teacher Institute in Early American History this summer.  Kendra is pursuing a history major at Bryn Athyn College with secondary school certification.

Bryn Athyn College students are the only undergraduates permitted to participate in this prestigious program.  The scholarship is awarded annually to a student who demonstrates merit and can handle the rigors of the experience.

During her stay in Williamsburg, Kendra will learn methods and materials for teaching high school history in a creative and living way. For one week she will live what she will be teaching by participating in the following activities:

  • Studying 17th and 18th century artifacts
  • Examining reasons why colonists chose Williamsburg as a settlement location (tidewater, geography)
  • Visiting Jamestown, a recreated Powhatan village, and an English fort
  • Touring replicas of sailing vessels
  • Reading diaries and journals to learn about family life
  • Comparing different styles of dress and how they represented status
  • Spending a day at the Great Hope Plantation, experiencing the life of African residents
  • Learning stories, games and music in the slave quarters
  • Hearing Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson in the Capitol building of Virginia debating independence from Britain and casting her vote as a representative
  • Becoming part of Colonial Williamsburg’s teacher network, exchanging ideas and receiving updates on new resources and methods

“I’m very excited to take what I’ve learned in education classes at Bryn Athyn and apply it to my favorite subject area,” Kendra says. “It will be awesome to be learning alongside educators who have taught history for years.”
