About Our Chaplain

Rev. Dr. Ray Silverman has been teaching religion at Bryn Athyn College since 1998, serving as College Chaplain since 2001. After receiving his Ph.D (Univeristy of Michigan, 1970) he responded to a call to the ministry. He attended Chaplaincy training at Harvard Divinity School/Episcopal Divinity School in 1979 and received his M.Div from the Academy of the New Church Theological School in 1984. In addition to having dedicated many years to teaching Religion, he has taught English, served as a Pastor, held a position as Director of World Wide Outreach, and run Prison Ministry, Marriage Enrichment and Spiritual Growth programs. He has also edited and revised Helen Keller's autobiography, which was published as Light in My Darkness in 2000, and authored (along with his wife Star) the highly acclaimed guide to spiritual growth, Rise Above It: Spiritual Development through the Ten Commandments.

Religious and Community Life

The College strives to build a collegiate spiritual community through its religious and community programs. We want to provide students and faculty with opportunities to worship as a community in a variety of ways so that there is ample opportunity for prayer, mutual reflection, and religious instruction while also providing times to meet, interact, and learn as a college community.

Chapel

Worship is an integral part of our college campus life. On Wednesday mornings we offer a chapel service that involves the entire college community. This is the only time during the week when all of our students, faculty, and staff come together to worship.

Because we feel that worshipping together is a vital part of our mission, this chapel service is required of all full-time students.

Devotional Chapel Service

In addition to the required Wednesday chapel, a brief devotional chapel service focused on readings from the Sacred Scriptures is offered on Monday and Friday mornings. These services are not required, but are offered as an opportunity for quiet reflection in the light of spiritual truth.

Weekly Announcements

Immediately following Wednesday chapel students, faculty, and staff gather in Pendleton Hall Commons for weekly announcements. This gathering time allows students and faculty to announce upcoming events, meetings and activities of general interest.

Weekly announcements are run by the student government. Those wishing to make announcements must sign up on a list posted outside the Associate Dean of Student Affairs' office (Pendleton Hall, room 112).

Lunch on Wednesdays is served in the Pendleton Hall Commons, providing an opportunity for students and faculty to relax and socialize together.

Bryn Athyn Church

Each week the Bryn Athyn Church hosts a number of church services. On a typical Sunday they may offer a Contemporary Worship Service, a Traditional Family Service, a Traditional Adult Service, and a Young Children's Service. They also offer a number of spiritual growth groups and doctrinal classes. Please visit www.brynathynchurch.org for more information.
