Bryn Athyn College creates Korean Student Exchanges

This May Bryn Athyn College signed exchange agreements with two universities in the Republic of Korea.

Sean Lawing, Director of International Studies at Bryn Athyn College, traveled to South Korea to meet with representatives from Kyonggi University and Woosuk University accompanied by Bryn Athyn College alumnus Sung-Won Paek. The purpose of the visit was to complete agreements with each institution that would allow students to study at their respective campuses on a one-to-one basis.

Located in the rolling hills in Jeonju, Woosuk University was founded in 1979 and is one of the largest and most respected universities in the southern region. Woosuk’s 15,000 students study at 8 colleges, 57 departments and 3 graduate schools. Woosuk has its own distinctive features and the following five specialized fields: Well-being & Public Health, Oriental Medicine, Sports & Health, Culture & Tourism and Welfare & Safety.

Kyonggi University has its origins in 1947 and is comprised of two campuses: Suwon and Seoul. Kyonggi University's Seoul campus, founded in 1949, is the original home of the university. Situated in the center of South Korea's capital city, Kyonggi University occupies a 30-acre campus. Kyonggi University's Suwon Campus was established at a site on Mount Kwang Gyo in 1979. Suwon, thirty miles south from Seoul, is a historic town, originally designed and constructed from 1794 to 1796 by King Chungjo of the Chosun Dynasty. Kyonggi University operates a 120-acre campus, convenient to downtown Suwon and many intercity highways, bus lines and subways/railways. Currently, this campus provides 11,000 students with comprehensive learning and research opportunities in Kyonggi province and offers 120 undergraduate and graduate programs in the Colleges of Humanities and Fine Arts, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and Engineering.

Two students from Kyonggi are attending Bryn Athyn College this fall, and a visit to Bryn Athyn’s campus by Woosuk University’s president is planned for October — a promising sign for students from both Korea and Bryn Athyn for an active exchange.

Bryn Athyn is expanding its international programs and currently maintains similar exchange programs in Germany and France. Every year 15%-18% of the student body is international coming from many different countries including Korea, Sweden, England, Germany, France, South Africa, Ghana, Serbia, Canada, Russia, Ukraine and Japan.
