The 2010 Commencement Ceremonies for Bryn Athyn College, which were held in the Mitchell Performing Arts Center on May 28, included an enthusiastic commencement address by Dr. Gerald M. Lemole, M.D.
Dr. Lemole, who is a world renowned heart surgeon, began his speech by talking to the 2010 graduates about change: "Congratulations – your life has just changed! ... You may not think it or feel it – but it has. One door has closed, others are opening.... You may go on to the workplace, graduate school, marriage or even a short respite – but it will not be the same."
While admitting that change can be uncomfortable and scary, Dr. Lemole assured the graduates that their educations at Bryn Athyn would guide them through whatever challenges life will bring. "Essential values are the rudders that guide us through the rough waters of change," he said, asserting that Bryn Athyn's spiritually focused education offers something beyond many other colleges. "All colleges offer their students education, community and a calling card. Religion-based colleges, like Bryn Athyn, offer something more – values – moral and spiritual, the lighthouse which guides you to safe harbor."
Dr. Lemole encouraged the graduates to apply their educations, saying, "Satisfaction, in both career and life, is powerfully influenced by attitude. Attitude is the difference maker.... You can’t substitute confidence for competence, or expectation for experience, but given the same talents, attitude will be a game changer."
The day's ceremonies included the traditional opening worship service, graduation exercises and the presentation of diplomas, and compelling valedictory addresses from both graduates receiving the both the Baccalaureate and the Associate in Arts degrees.
