Academic Philosophy

Our educational philosophy is grounded in the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg and the benefits of a comprehensive liberal arts program.

We are a New Church, liberal arts institution devoted to teaching and learning in an environment that acknowledges spiritual purpose in life. We believe that higher education at its best facilitates this process by opening minds, sharpening skills, and cultivating a sense of purpose so that we can make choices that matter and that lead to meaningful, useful lives.

The purpose of creation is for each of us to act for a higher good, to be useful, and to do so in freedom guided by reason. This emphasis on freedom, reason, and action underpins our curriculum, especially as expressed through our Core Program. Our academics are grounded in a religious world view, informed and challenged by liberal arts disciplines, to the end that students develop the ability and desire to be useful.

The theology of the New Church fuels our mission, but we are not a church. We are a liberal arts college with a religious mission to spread the teachings of the New Church through intellectual engagement and academic channels.

College Mission

Bryn Athyn College of the New Church serves as an intellectual center for all who desire to pursue a higher education in the liberal arts and sciences, enriched and structured by the Old and New Testaments and the Writings of Emanuel Swedenborg. The purpose of this education is to enhance students' civil, moral, and spiritual lives, as well as to contribute to human spiritual welfare.

Our mission underscores our commitment to liberal arts education with an emphasis on developing thinking at the spiritual, moral, and civil levels. Education through exposure to a variety of disciplines (liberal arts) frees the mind from ignorance and provincialism; education enlivened by spiritual teachings anchors learning in values.
