Casey Schauder: Marathons and More

Before Casey Schauder (Bryn Athyn College 2003, Penn State 2006) graduated from college, she was not particularly fond of running. When she was required to play sports in high school, she made an effort to pick those with as little running as possible. After college, however, Casey was attracted to running as an activity requiring minimal equipment and no commute.

Since then Casey has become increasingly interested in running, participating in approximately ten events in the past three years. These events include 5Ks, marathons, and triathlons. Though she competes occasionally, Casey prefers to run for fun. Her favorite race is the Blue Cross Broad Street Run in Philadelphia because it is "close, downhill and the right time of year." Though she often runs with other people or with her dog while training, during races she runs alone, finding that her pace differs too much from those of her friends.

Casey trains in a variety of ways for races, incorporating hill runs, sprints and long runs into her regimen. The focus of her training depends also on her goals; when training for a marathon, for instance, her focus is on endurance while this summer she will be working on speed because her goal is to beat all her times from last summer.

Currently working as an administrative assistant at Bryn Athyn College, Schauder plans to continue participating in events and improving her times, pursuing her passion for running as long as possible.
