Frequently Asked Questions

I don’t have a lot of free time. Can I still be a mentor?
There are many levels of mentoring. Commitments can range from one-time conversations to occasional emails to monthly meetings. If you inform us of your availability, we can tell students what to expect.

I am not able to meet face-to-face. Can I still be a mentor?
You can tailor the experience to suit your needs. Please tell us if you prefer email, phone, Skype, face-to-face meetings, or a combination of these.

How long is the commitment?
Mentoring can be as short as one conversation or as long as six months. We recommend a six month maximum so that other students have the opportunity to reach out to mentors.

What do I do as a mentor?
We want to ensure your mentoring experiences are as successful as possible, because your time is valuable and a gift to our students. All mentors will be given a brief booklet on the tools of mentoring which provides some general guidelines. When a student contacts you, the two of you will develop a mentor agreement and set realistic goals. (Throughout the mentoring process, your mentee will submit progress reports to the career office. We may also contact you to check in and get your perspective. After completing the goals, we would love to have your feedback on the experience).

How am I matched with a mentee?
Students interested in participating in the career mentor program submit an application, resume, and cover letter to the career office. Accepted students will show commitment to the program and have realistic goals for the mentoring relationship. Students are then assigned a mentor who best matches their interests.

Will I always have a mentee?
No. Sometimes your expertise will not align with student interest, but we will keep your form on file for future use.
