Past Productions: Bryn Athyn College Rocks! 2004

BAC ROCKS! 2004 was planned in 2003 and soon thereafter the band began rehearsing and preparing for the show. The show was performed on April 7, in the Mitchell Performing Arts Center. The musical choice for this year's show was "Classic Rock," and included music by Deep Purple, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, Doobie Brothers, the Allman Brothers, the Beatles, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, the Rolling Stones, and Janis Joplin. BAC ROCKS! 2004 was the first ever standing room only show for a paying audience in the Mitchell Performing Arts Center. Less than a month later, on May 1 2004, the band also performed an outdoor show on the steps of the main College building Pendleton Hall during the College's Spring Weekend.

MC Ray Silverman kicked of the events by introducing the musically quirky, and very talented opening act: The Fresh Cut Salads. They played a solid set of excellent, humorous and entertaining songs that affectionately won over the audience.

The BAC Rocks! band then took the stage and started off with a rendition of Richard Strauss composition "Also Sprach Zarathustra," that segued into the 70s classic "Long Train Running" by the Doobie Brothers. The band continued with a string of 60s and 70s classics including "Black Night" (Deep Purple), "Piece of My Heart" (Janis Joplin) and "Jumping Jack Flash" (Rolling Stones) before ending the first set with an over 9 minute long version of Clapton’s "After Midnight."

The second set kicked off with an 80s metal inspired guitar solo by Rhys Asplundh. The band then joined in on the stage and continued performing old classic rock gems. A surprise, and much appreciated moment towards the end of the show was the appearance of the Bryn Athyn College Faculty on stage who sang back-up vocals on the Beatles classic "Hey Jude."

A highlight of the evening: the band playing "Hey Jude" with College Dean Chuck Lindsay on keyboards and college faculty singing backing vocals.

The show ended with encore "Free Bird," a song that a cover band with self-respect is not supposed to play…. This was thus a bit of a gamble. To the band’s big surprise, however, the audience loved it. Especially memorable was Joe Henrys phenomenal guitar solo.
