Past Productions: Bryn Athyn College Rocks! 2006

By Malcolm Smith

The BAC ROCKS! 2006 production was staged in the Mitchell Performing Arts Center on Wednesday October 18, Thursday October 19 & Sunday October 22, 2006. The previous week the BAC ROCKS! 2006 band had performed a surprise show on the campus dining hall roof to promote the upcoming production.

The three concerts, held on Wednesday and Thursday night and Sunday afternoon of Charter Day weekend, were performed in the Mitchell Performing Arts Center on a set built by college and high school students under the direction of Naomi Haus-Roth to replicate the rooftop of the Apple building. A portion of the set construction was done by College students and faculty as part of the College’s Service Day 2006.

BAC ROCKS! 2006 performed a total of 44 songs, featuring pieces from throughout the Beatles' career. One of the highlights for the band members was seeing the audience getting up to dance and sing along with the more danceable songs like “Back in the U.S.S.R.” and “Can't Buy Me Love.”

As part of the fund raising BAC ROCKS! 2006 had a guitar raffle where the lucky winner won a new Epiphone Casino Guitar (which is the same type of guitar that The Beatles used on many of their songs). MC Allen Bedford and two volunteers from the audience did the draw during the intermission of the October 22 show.

Another highlight for all of the members of the band was playing the medley from the B-side of Abbey Road. As Chuck Lindsay put it, “It was a total rush... I was thinking, it doesn't get any better than this!”

A highlight for many of the audience members was the unplugged set that started off the second half of the concert which featured songs like “Blackbird,” “Norwegian Wood,” “Across the Universe” and an a cappella version of “Yesterday.”

The quality of the vocals—sweet during the a cappella set and energetic and soulful the rest of the time—testified to the 10 months that the group had been practicing.

The instrumentalists were equally strong as they negotiated the many different moods and rhythms of The Beatles' music. One of the most memorable moments was when the white spotlights swiveled around to shine on sophomore Ryan Cook (who has only been playing guitar for two and a half years) as he cradled his guitar while it gently wept in his arms.

A remarkable thing about Ryan and all the band members was the relaxedness with which they performed. Figge commented that normally the actual concerts are fun but stressful but this time he said that everyone was just really relaxed up there and having so much fun.

The band's enjoyment of the music was shared by the audience members, many of whom came to multiple concerts.

The rough estimate at this point is that this year's BAC ROCKS! concerts raised $7,000 for the fund for the college science building.
