Bryn Athyn College of the New Church celebrated the accomplishments of its graduating class during its 149th Commencement Ceremony on May 30, 2026, marking a milestone for students, families, faculty, and friends gathered to honor years of academic achievement, personal growth, and spiritual development.

The ceremony opened with a welcome from Rt. Rev. Peter Buss Jr. (M.Div. ’93, AA ’88), Chancellor of the Academy of the New Church, who greeted graduates and guests, and lead opening worship. Reverend Scott Frazier (M.Div. ’06, BA ’98), Dean of the Theological School, followed with an inspiring message centered on “states of preparation,” drawing from the biblical journey of the Israelites from the wilderness into the promised land. He encouraged graduates to view commencement not as an ending, but as a transition into a new phase of purpose and opportunity.

Commencement speaker Edmond de Chazal (AA ’83), a former automotive industry professional, shared personal reflections on the lasting impact of his education. He identified three enduring “gifts” he received from the College: a deep engagement with New Church teachings, connection to a supportive, worldwide community, and the opportunity to integrate faith with academic study.

Offering practical advice for life beyond graduation, de Chazal emphasized the importance of relationships and service. “Relationships are everything,” he told graduates, encouraging them to invest in meaningful connections and pursue a “life of use” dedicated to serving others and contributing positively to their communities.

The ceremony continued with the conferral of degrees, including Associate of Arts, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts in Religious Studies, and Master of Divinity degrees. Graduates proudly crossed the stage to receive their diplomas, cheered on by family members, friends, and faculty.

Valedictorian Deidré Bongers reflected on the challenges and triumphs that defined the college experience. In her remarks, she highlighted the importance of the “village” that supported students throughout their journeys, expressing gratitude for the encouragement and guidance provided by classmates, professors, mentors, and loved ones.

Closing the ceremony, President Sean Connelly (BA ’94) praised the resilience, dedication, and character demonstrated by the Class of 2026. He reminded graduates that their education extends beyond academic achievement and challenged them to carry forward the values they cultivated at Bryn Athyn College.

“A life of use,” President Connelly noted, “is the way love takes shape in the world.”

As the graduates celebrated their accomplishments and looked toward the future, the ceremony served as both a recognition of their achievements and a call to apply their talents, faith, and education in service to others.

"To feel the joy of another as joy in oneself, that is loving." DLW 47
